Clinic for Special Children is now offering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Perhaps you've heard that TMS is an FDA-approved treatment that effectively addresses Major Depressive Disorder, OCD, and Anxious Depression in adolescents and adults. FDA approval suggests that this treatment is really effective and crosses into a new era of mental health treatments that target the brain's natural plasticity. Research has demonstrated some efficacy in the autism population as well- though this indication is still undergoing clinical trials. The Clinic is participating in the data analysis for this purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

 1) What is TMS?

TMS is non-invasive and uses MRI-strength magnetic pulses to trigger brain activity in areas of the brain that are underactive.

2) How long before I see improvement?

Most patients who undergo TMS treatment see improvements after 1 week of treatment.

3) Is TMS safe?

TMS is very safe and causes adverse reactions in less than 0.003% of the population who has been treated. Over 6.4 million people have been successfully treated by TMS worldwide.

4) Is TMS a Medical Treatment?

Studies show that the more medications used for Depression and Anxiety, the LESS likely you are to continue being compliant and seeking treatment over time, leading to increased mental health decline. TMS is a medical treatment for depression and anxiety, not a pharmaceutical one.

5) Is TMS like ECT?

TMS is nothing like ECT. ECT is done in a hospital setting and aims to induce seizure activity as a way to treat mental illness. TMS is an outpatient treatment that avoids triggering seizure activity and instead focuses on stimulating neurons in the brain that will trigger the release of happy hormones and wake up the "dead" parts of your brain that aren't working properly leading to decreased mood stability.
